I am most pleased to dedicate this arrangement to James Kevin Gray and the Chancel Choir of St. John’s Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC, to celebrate his call to that church and their first Advent season together.
This ancient Eucharistic chant dates back to at least 275 AD, and is based on words from Habakkuk, chapter 2, verse 20: Let all the earth keep silence before him. The original was composed in Greek as an Offertory as part of the Divine Liturgy of St James, and was translated to english by Gerard Moultrie. It is sung to the hymn tune Picardy, a French medieval folk melody.
I’ve set this very simply as doing too much might detract from the beauty of the melody and the text.
At the discretion of the director, this piece may be performed a cappella, omitting the organ part.
